Connect masonry design notes, details and specifications

Masonry review spans structural design criteria and construction requirements. Verify that the wall identities, material assumptions and detailing describe the same assembly.

TMS 402 addresses masonry structural design and TMS 602 addresses masonry construction specifications. Confirm the project editions, then trace the stated design basis through wall plans, schedules, reinforcement, connection details and specifications.

Use the paired references deliberately

The Masonry Society publishes TMS 402 and TMS 602 together with companion commentaries. Its current resources include the 2022 edition. Confirm which editions are referenced by the adopted code and the project documents.

Record design assumptions and construction requirements separately. A material clause in the specification does not by itself establish that the structural design used that same assumption.

Review one wall and its boundaries

Select a wall mark and follow it through the architectural plan, structural plan, schedule and sections. Match height, thickness, opening geometry and adjoining systems. Keep the actual location with each comparison.

The structural checklist covers the broader set. For masonry, pay particular attention to repeated wall types that have different local opening or receiving conditions.

A hypothetical opening coordination question

Suppose the architectural plan widens an opening while the structural lintel schedule still identifies the earlier opening condition. Record the opening, wall mark and both source references. The structural engineer determines the required design response.

After confirmation, backcheck the lintel detail, reinforcement extent and any equipment or finish interface around the opening. Do not treat a changed architectural dimension as an approved structural redesign.

Sources and professional judgment

The Masonry Society’s TMS 402/602 resources identify the design and specification standards and available editions. Source checked October 13, 2026.

Use the licensed project references and issued masonry specifications for a code and document review. The responsible engineer verifies analysis, strength, stability and applicable detailing requirements.

This worksheet does not reproduce the standard’s numerical design provisions. It helps locate inconsistencies and missing relationships in the evidence supplied.

Questions, answered

FAQs

Are TMS 402 and TMS 602 interchangeable?

They have different roles: design requirements and construction specifications. Confirm the project references and compare the related documents.

Does a typical wall detail cover every opening?

Verify the actual opening, support and receiving conditions. A repeated detail may require a location-specific design response.

Does the review certify masonry strength?

No. It supports source comparison for the responsible engineer’s design and compliance review.
