A conflict between two drawings can become a replacement order, a stalled crew, or work that has to be demolished and rebuilt. The cost depends on what the error affects—and how far construction has progressed before someone catches it.

The best time to resolve a drawing conflict is before anyone builds from it. Research shows that rework can take a meaningful share of project costs and contractor profits. What research tells us about the cost

There is no single percentage that describes the cost of drawing errors on every project. Studies use different definitions, project types, and accounting methods. Rework can result from design mistakes, construction mistakes, omissions, and changes. It would be misleading to attribute all of it to drawings.

Design decisions can have a large downstream cost

The Construction Industry Institute's 1989 report, Costs of Quality Deviations in Design and Construction, reported average rework costs exceeding 12% on the industrial projects studied. About 80% of the increased costs were associated with design deviations, a category covering changes, errors, and omissions. This is historical evidence from industrial construction, not a current industry average or a measure of drawing errors alone.

Even a small share of contract value can hurt profit

A 2018 study by Love and colleagues examined 19,605 rework events across 346 projects delivered by one contractor between 2009 and 2015. The researchers reported that rework reduced the contractor's mean yearly profit by 28% over the study period. For the 98 projects with complete cost data, mean recorded rework cost was 0.39% of contract value. Those percentages have different denominators: a modest cost relative to revenue can consume a large share of profit.

A few expensive events can dominate the total

In that same study, 88 events—just 0.45% of the recorded events—accounted for 34% of rework costs. This helps explain why counting findings alone is a poor measure of review value. A consequential coordination issue may matter more than many minor comments. The study concerns one contractor's recorded rework, not costs attributable specifically to drawing mistakes. These results should not be averaged together or treated as predicted savings from software. They establish the financial importance of preventing rework; they do not establish how much a particular review tool will save.

How a drawing mismatch becomes a construction cost

Consider an illustrative coordination problem: the mechanical drawings call for a duct through a location where the structural drawings show a beam. Each sheet may look reasonable by itself. The conflict appears when someone checks the two systems together.

  • Before procurement: the team can investigate the route, agree on a solution, and update the affected documents.
  • After fabrication: the solution may also require revised shop drawings, replacement components, or a changed order.
  • After installation: it may involve removing completed work, bringing trades back, and repairing adjacent finishes.

The direct bill is only part of the exposure. Work may need to pause while the designer responds. A crew may move to another area, changing the sequence for other trades. Supervisors and project managers spend time documenting the issue and arranging the correction.

Other examples include an equipment schedule that disagrees with the electrical load, a door detail that conflicts with its specified assembly, or dimensions that differ between a plan and a section. These are generic examples, not reported Groundbook customer outcomes. Their actual cost depends on the design, procurement commitments, site conditions, and timing.

Earlier detection creates an opportunity to avoid some of those consequences. It does not make the underlying design change free, and a finding only helps when the team verifies and resolves it.

Why skilled reviewers still miss issues

Architects, engineers, and contractors have always caught drawing errors. The difficulty is consistently finding the relevant conflicts across an entire set while the design is changing and deadlines remain fixed.

The Get It Right Initiative's research into construction error identified communication, interface coordination, late changes, commercial pressures, and information overload among the reported causes. Its conclusions also acknowledge limited cost records and a study group representing only a small part of the UK industry. The findings point to problems in how work is organized, not simply a lack of technical ability.

The evidence is spread across documents

A reviewer checking an equipment connection may need the floor plan, equipment schedule, electrical drawings, structural support detail, and specification. Finding each reference takes time. A contradiction can remain hidden when the reviewer sees only part of that information.

Responsibility is divided across disciplines

Each specialist brings essential expertise, but a check within one discipline does not automatically test every relationship with another. The interfaces need their own attention: what one system requires, what another provides, and whether the documents agree.

Revisions create new dependencies

Moving an opening can affect several sheets and details. Correcting the original comment does not prove that every dependent reference was updated. Teams need time to revisit both the change and its consequences.

Finding the issue is only the beginning

A vague comment still leaves work for the reviewer: locate the condition, identify the conflicting reference, understand the concern, and decide what to do. If that verification is slow, even a useful finding can take too long to reach the person who can resolve it.

Why digital tools have not removed the problem

Searchable PDFs, shared document platforms, and BIM coordination have improved access to information. They support valuable checks, but each addresses only part of the review process.

A search can locate an equipment tag without establishing whether the associated requirements agree. A shared folder can hold the correct files without checking their relationships. A geometric clash check can reveal an intersection while a conflicting specification, missing note, or inconsistent schedule requires a different kind of review. The practical challenge remains: assemble the relevant evidence, compare it, and get a clear question to the responsible reviewer. Better tools need to make that sequence easier to repeat across the project.
