Rebar shop drawing review checklist

A reinforcing placing drawing must be reviewed against the correct structural design issue. Match the member, location, direction and layer before comparing a bar callout, then trace local reinforcement into the placing package.

Check the governing design, bar counts and sizes, spacing and group extents, connection reinforcement, embeds, openings and the response to earlier comments. Record the design and placing references together so the engineer and detailer can resolve the same question.

Establish the governing design issue

Collect the structural design drawings, general notes, reinforcement legends and approved design changes cited by the placing package. Identify missing referenced details before assessing the affected reinforcement. A superseded drawing can create an apparent conflict or conceal a real one.

Review the same condition in both sets. Slab thickness, support position, bar direction, layer and extent determine which design note applies. A similar-looking detail elsewhere is not evidence that the same reinforcement governs this location.

Keep base mats and added reinforcement separate

Follow the design’s base reinforcement separately from additional support, edge, opening or step reinforcement. A placing note showing additional bars does not establish that the base mat is present. Conversely, a base-mat note does not establish the local bars required by another detail.

Compare a quantity only after identifying its direction, layer and zone. Record a bar-size mismatch separately from a spacing or length mismatch so the responsible designer can answer precisely. Preserve any accepted change rather than replacing it with an assumed typical condition.

Trace embeds, anchors and future openings

Locate the reinforcement required around an embed or anchor in the actual placing plan. Check whether it is included in this package or in a named separate package. For curtain-wall anchors, coordinate the reinforcement with the confirmed mullion layout; a generic detail alone does not establish placement.

Future infill connections also need coordinated locations. Follow the bars and matching cast-in connections around the opening, using the governing connection detail. Record missing information before releasing a placing assumption to the team.

A published reinforcing review example

In the concrete deck reinforcing review, placing plans showed fewer top bars than the supplied structural design and smaller base-mat bars in another location. Other comments requested a missing governing revision and traceable reinforcement at embeds, curtain-wall anchors and future infill connections.

Those comments show why a comparison needs the complete design and all relevant placing packages. They remain review questions for the engineer and detailer; the case study does not establish fabrication approval or a completed correction.

Source references and closure

UFGS 03 30 00, Cast-In-Place Concrete includes reinforcing-steel shop drawing requirements as a federal guide-specification example. Read it with the project submittal procedure and the actual structural design. Sources checked October 13, 2026.

Backcheck the revised placing sheets against each comment and its design response. Keep the governing revision and disposition visible in the submittal log. For an earlier design-stage check, use the concrete design-document checklist.

Questions, answered

FAQs

What should I compare with reinforcing shop drawings?

Use the governing structural design, reinforcement legends and notes, relevant details, accepted changes and the receiving connection layouts. Include separate placing packages where they provide the local reinforcement.

Is this different from reviewing structural design drawings?

Yes. This checklist compares a proposed placing package with the design it must follow. A structural design review addresses the design documents themselves.

Can an AI finding approve a reinforcing package?

No. Potential findings support the engineer and detailer’s review. The authorized project reviewer makes the disposition and release decision.
