Find each sound-rated opening on the door schedule and confirm that it shows a required STC rating, the door material, the frame construction, any fire and smoke rating, and the door bottom, threshold, astragal, and vision panel the issued Section 08 34 73 expects, then check that it sits in the acoustically rated wall the plans intend. Then confirm that the STC-related hardware is listed in Section 08 34 73 rather than only in Section 08 71 00, that the frame infill and jamb anchors suit the wall type, and that any field testing the section keeps is in the test plan.
Assemble the review package
Gather the door schedule, door and frame elevations, head, jamb, and sill details, the partition type schedule with its acoustic ratings, the floor plans with door numbers, the life safety plan, the floor finish plan, the hardware sets, the acoustical consultant’s report if one was issued, and the issued Section 08 34 73 with Sections 08 11 13, 08 71 00, and 08 81 00. Review one rated room from its partition type to its door details before assuming the other sound doors match.
WBDG publishes UFGS 08 34 73: Sound Control Door Assemblies as a public guide-specification reference (accessed October 22, 2026). Use your project’s issued specification and amendments for the actual comparison; the guide specification does not automatically govern your project. The checklist below is an original suggested review workflow, not a reproduction of the UFGS requirements.
Eight checks to run against the issued set
Use one record per location or system. The CSV contains the same eight prompts plus fields for source revisions, observed evidence, the review owner, the decision, and closure references.
| Check | Sources to compare | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Sound-rated openings identified | STC (Sound Transmission Classification) Rating article + door schedule + partition types | Does every door in an acoustically rated wall carry an STC value on the schedule, or does the section defer to the schedule while the schedule column is blank? |
| Door construction | Hollow Metal Sound Retardant Doors and Wood Sound Retardant Doors articles + door schedule | Does the scheduled door material match the construction the edited section keeps, and for wood doors, the facing type and finish selected? |
| Fire-rated sound doors | Category A and Category B Positive Pressure Fire Door Construction, Labeling, and Positive Pressure articles + life safety plan | Where a sound door is also fire rated, does the schedule show the rating, and does the edited section keep the positive pressure construction and the label for the complete opening? |
| Frames, infill, and anchors | Frames, Door Frame Sound Infill, and Jamb Anchors articles + wall types + jamb details | Is an infill material selected for the frames, and does the anchor type kept (masonry, stud wall, or post-installed) match the wall each door is in? |
| STC hardware split | Door Hardware article + hardware sets + Section 08 71 00 | Are cam-lift hinges, perimeter seals, door bottoms, thresholds, and astragals listed with the door assembly, and do the hardware sets avoid continuous hinges and closer arms the designer notes say do not work with this assembly? |
| Seals, door bottoms, and thresholds | Head and Jamb Seals, Door Bottoms, Automatic Door Bottoms, and Thresholds articles + sill details + floor finish plan | Does the door bottom mounting in the details match the option kept, and is the threshold drawn as a flat, unfluted profile coordinated with the floor finish on each side? |
| Vision panels and pairs | Vision Panels and Astragals articles + door elevations + Section 08 81 00 | Where elevations show lites or pairs of doors, are the vision panel and astragal paragraphs kept, and is the glazing coordinated with the glazing section? |
| Testing and guarantee | Sound Transmission Classification, Guarantee, and Field Quality Control articles + test plan | Do the test reports requested reflect the wall and frame type the drawings show, and if field testing is kept, is it in the testing schedule before acceptance? |
Worked example: an STC column with no values
Illustrative example: a conference room and a secure briefing room have doors marked “STC” on the door schedule with no value, and the issued Section 08 34 73 sets the STC by the door schedule. The briefing room door is also a fire-rated corridor door, and its hardware set in Section 08 71 00 calls for a continuous hinge and a parallel-arm closer.
Ask the architect and acoustical consultant to enter the required STC for each door, and confirm the fire label and positive pressure category for the corridor door. Ask the hardware consultant to move the STC-related hardware into the Section 08 34 73 list and to replace the continuous hinge and closer arm with ones compatible with cam-lift hinges, as the section’s designer notes describe.
Avoid a false conflict
A sound door can appear in the hollow metal frame schedule and the hardware schedule while being bought under Section 08 34 73 as one tested assembly. Confirm which section furnishes the door, frame, seals, and hinges before raising a conflict with the steel door guide (08 11 13) or the door hardware guide (08 71 00), so the same seal is not specified twice or dropped from both.
When requirements disagree, follow the project’s document-control and clarification process. Do not assume that drawings always override specifications, or the reverse. Identify the exact sources and request an authorized decision.
Close the issue across the affected documents
Record the location or tag, drawing and specification references, issue dates, observed difference, and the decision needed. Assign an owner and keep the item open until the response identifies the governing requirement. Check the revised drawings and specification references together; a response email alone may leave the issued package inconsistent.
For the overall process, use the guide to drawing and specification conflicts. Mark an inapplicable checklist row with a reason, and distinguish a verified correction from a question that still needs design information.
Where Groundbook fits
Groundbook’s drawing and specification review helps investigate potential disagreements in the documents you supply. Include the relevant specification sections and drawing references, then verify the cited evidence with the responsible reviewers before acting on a finding.
