Confirm which version of UFC 3-410-01 the contract invokes, since WBDG now lists a reissued digital edition, and check that the mechanical general notes cite the IMC as modified by the UFC rather than the IMC alone. Then trace the load calculation design conditions, the space-type ventilation and exhaust requirements, the system rules for economizers, VAV, VRF, and ground-source heat pumps, and the duct air leakage testing, balancing, and commissioning scope through the drawings and specifications. AI can flag conflicts; the mechanical engineer of record and the DoD reviewer decide compliance.
What does UFC 3-410-01 cover?
The digital UFC 3-410-01, Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Systems, gives requirements for HVAC design and for selecting HVAC materials and equipment. Chapter 1 covers system selection, design documentation, general ventilation, heating and cooling load calculations, space-type requirements such as data rooms, laboratories, fire stations, laundries, commercial kitchens, and vehicle maintenance, and system topics including economizers, variable speed drives, humidification, steam, ground-source heat pumps, VAV, VRF, radiant systems, dampers, redundancy, corrosion, sound and vibration, duct air leakage testing, testing and balancing, moisture and mold, and commissioning. Chapter 2 modifies the IMC.
WBDG’s UFC 3-410-01 page lists the criteria as active digital UFC content, published July 2, 2026, and tells teams to refer to UFC 1-200-01 for project applicability. The digital criteria viewer labels the latest version September 30, 2026. Checked October 19, 2026. WBDG lists a change date of September 30, 2026 and eighteen superseded files, the newest from 2025 with Change 1. Contracts awarded before the reissue may invoke a superseded PDF version; record the version and date the task order names.
The UFC names the IMC, as modified by the UFC, as the DoD code for HVAC, and its Chapter 2 substitutes DoD criteria for the IMC’s references: UFC 1-200-01 for the IBC, NFPA 54 and NFPA 58 for the IFGC, UFC 3-420-01 for the IPC, UFC 1-200-02 for the IECC, UFC 3-600-01 for the IFC, and UFC 3-501-01 for NFPA 70. Design analysis and drawing requirements are in the companion UFS 3-410-01. The UFC 3-401-01 guide covers the umbrella mechanical criteria and the IMC guide the model code.
Gather the HVAC design and criteria documents
Collect the task order naming the UFC version, the mechanical design analysis with load calculations and design conditions, the ventilation calculations, mechanical plans, sections, and details, equipment schedules, control diagrams and sequences, the duct and piping specifications, and the duct air leakage testing, testing and balancing, and commissioning sections. Add the architectural room schedule and the electrical plans for equipment power.
Write down each special space type in the building, such as data rooms or vehicle maintenance bays, because the UFC sets its own ventilation and exhaust requirements for them.
Trace HVAC criteria through the set
| Review question | Sources to compare | Decision to record |
|---|---|---|
| Code basis | Mechanical general notes, design analysis, specifications | Confirm the documents cite the IMC as modified by UFC 3-410-01 and the DoD substitutions, not the IMC and its referenced codes alone. |
| Load calculation design conditions | Design analysis, load calculations, weather data source, equipment schedules | Check the outdoor and indoor design conditions and that equipment capacities match the calculations. |
| Space-type ventilation and exhaust | Room schedule, mechanical plans, exhaust fan schedule, sequences | Match each special space to its ventilation, exhaust, and make-up air on the plans and schedules. |
| System rules | Equipment schedules, control sequences, specifications | Record which economizer, VAV, VRF, or ground-source heat pump rules apply and whether the sequences and schedules follow them. |
| Duct leakage testing and balancing | Duct specifications, testing and balancing section, mechanical plans | Confirm which duct systems get leakage testing and that balancing devices are drawn where the testing and balancing scope needs them. |
| Moisture, mold, and commissioning | Design analysis, sequences, commissioning section | Check dehumidification control is designed and sequenced, and that the commissioning section covers the systems drawn. |
Balancing continues in the testing, adjusting, and balancing specifications guide, ductwork in the HVAC air distribution specifications guide, sequences in the HVAC controls guide, and ventilation rates in the ASHRAE 62.1 guide.
Example: a vehicle bay without make-up air
Hypothetical example. A vehicle maintenance facility has three service bays. The exhaust fan schedule lists a vehicle exhaust system and general bay exhaust, but the mechanical plans show no make-up air unit serving the bays, the sequence of operation does not interlock the exhaust with any supply, and the general notes cite the IMC with no reference to the UFC.
The exhaust fan schedule lists vehicle and general bay exhaust, but the plans show no make-up air for the service bays, the sequence does not interlock exhaust and supply, and the general notes cite the IMC without UFC 3-410-01. Confirm the make-up air design and the code basis, and coordinate the plans, schedule, sequence, and notes.
The mechanical engineer adds or locates the make-up air and updates the sequence and notes. The finding is a document gap, not an airflow calculation.
Review DoD HVAC documents with Groundbook
Upload the current drawings and specifications to Groundbook, and state the edition, amendments, and review scope in your instructions. Add UFC 3-410-01 and the other UFCs the task order names from WBDG, which publishes them free, plus the model codes and standards the project uses from copies you are licensed to upload.
Compare the mechanical design analysis, load and ventilation calculations, mechanical plans, sections, details, equipment and fan schedules, control sequences, room schedule, electrical equipment connections, and the HVAC, duct leakage testing, balancing, and commissioning specifications. Flag a conflicting UFC version, a code basis that omits the UFC modifications, equipment that does not match the load calculations, special spaces without their exhaust or make-up air, sequences that do not follow the system rules, missing duct leakage testing or balancing devices, and systems outside the commissioning scope. Use the supplied UFC 3-410-01 and cite both sources.
Groundbook links each potential finding to the sheets and documents involved. It does not calculate loads, airflow, or equipment sizes.
Document review does not certify compliance with DoD criteria or replace the mechanical engineer of record, the commissioning authority, or the DoD authority.
