Check water chiller specifications against drawings

A chiller schedule can list a performance value without confirming it was actually certified under the standard the specification requires, or that the mechanical room around it was designed for the refrigerant safety provisions that type of chiller triggers. Review the chiller and its room together before treating the schedule as complete.

Trace each water chiller from the schedule into its type and configuration, performance certification basis, refrigerant safety classification, and purge or sound requirements, then confirm mechanical room ventilation and supplemental piping references before treating a schedule entry as coordinated.

Assemble the review package

Gather the mechanical equipment schedule, the mechanical room plan and section, refrigerant piping and leak-detection drawings, structural pad or vibration-isolation details, and the issued water chillers specification. Review one chiller and its room completely before assuming a similar schedule row shares the same refrigerant safety and purge requirements.

WBDG publishes UFGS 23 64 10: Water Chillers, Vapor Compression Type as a public guide-specification reference (accessed September 26, 2026). Use your project’s issued specification and amendments for the actual comparison; the guide specification does not automatically govern your project. The checklist below is an original suggested review workflow, not a reproduction of the UFGS requirements.

Eight checks to run against the issued set

Use one record per location or system. The CSV contains the same eight prompts plus fields for source revisions, observed evidence, the review owner, the decision, and closure references.

CheckSources to compareQuestion to resolve
Chiller type and configurationSchedule type note + specified self-contained or split-system configurationDoes the scheduled chiller resolve to a defined configuration (scroll, reciprocating, rotary screw, or centrifugal self-contained; or split-system compressor-chiller with remote condenser) rather than a generic “chiller” label?
Performance certification basisSchedule capacity and efficiency values + specified AHRI 550/590 I-P certificationWhere the specified operating conditions fall outside the AHRI 550/590 I-P application rating table, has the chiller’s performance actually been independently rated under that standard rather than interpolated, and does the submittal show performance adjusted for the project’s site elevation?
Refrigerant safety classificationMechanical room plan + specified ANSI/ASHRAE 15 and 34 complianceFor an indoor chiller, do the refrigerant relief piping routing and the refrigerant leak-detection system shown on the mechanical drawings match what ANSI/ASHRAE 15 and the mechanical code require for that machinery room?
Purge system requirementChiller operating pressure + specified AHRI 580 purge system requirementWhere the schedule specifies a chiller that operates below atmospheric pressure, does the submittal include the required purge system, and does it document refrigerant emissions kept within ASHRAE 147 limits?
Sound rating basisSchedule sound criteria + specified AHRI 575 sound test basisDoes a specified maximum sound pressure level trace to a chiller tested and rated under AHRI 575, rather than an assumed value, and does the project’s proximity to occupied space match the criteria used?
Mechanical room ventilation coordinationMechanical room plan + specified mechanical room ventilation requirementDoes the mechanical or electrical drawing set show the ventilation rate and refrigerant-monitoring interlock the specification’s mechanical room ventilation provisions assume for that chiller’s refrigerant type and charge?
Compressor driver coordinationSchedule driver type + specified electric motor or gas-engine driver requirementsWhere a gas-engine compressor driver is specified instead of an electric motor, do the mechanical room and structural drawings show the exhaust piping, muffler, combustion air, and fuel supply the driver requires?
Supplemental components boundarySpecified supplemental components/services list + issued piping and controls sectionsDo the chilled and condenser water piping, refrigerant piping, cooling tower, and temperature controls listed as supplemental components actually appear in their own referenced sections, rather than being assumed as included in the chiller submittal?

Worked example: a low-pressure chiller without its purge system

Illustrative example: a central plant schedule specifies a centrifugal chiller selected for its low full-load efficiency, which operates below atmospheric pressure in its evaporator. The mechanical room drawings show refrigerant monitoring sized for a positive-pressure package chiller elsewhere on the same sheet, but do not show the purge system or the refrigerant-emission provisions the low-pressure design requires.

Confirm the actual operating pressure of the selected chiller with the mechanical engineer, add the required purge system and refrigerant leak-detection provisions to the mechanical room documents, and recheck the room’s ventilation rate for the corrected refrigerant charge before closing the item.

Avoid a false conflict

A chiller schedule entry that lists a capacity and efficiency value does not by itself confirm the performance was certified under the specified standard, or that the mechanical room around it was sized for that specific chiller’s refrigerant safety provisions; a low-pressure centrifugal chiller and a positive-pressure packaged chiller can trigger different room requirements even when both are labeled “chiller” on the same schedule.

When requirements disagree, follow the project’s document-control and clarification process. Do not assume that drawings always override specifications, or the reverse. Identify the exact sources and request an authorized decision.

Close the issue across the affected documents

Record the location or tag, drawing and specification references, issue dates, observed difference, and the decision needed. Assign an owner and keep the item open until the response identifies the governing requirement. Check the revised drawings and specification references together; a response email alone may leave the issued package inconsistent.

For the overall process, use the guide to drawing and specification conflicts. Mark an inapplicable checklist row with a reason, and distinguish a verified correction from a question that still needs design information.

Groundbook’s drawing and specification review helps investigate potential disagreements in the documents you supply. Include the relevant specification sections and drawing references, then verify the cited evidence with the responsible reviewers before acting on a finding.

Questions, answered

FAQs

What should a water chiller document review compare?

Compare chiller type and configuration, performance certification basis, refrigerant safety classification, purge system requirement, sound rating basis, mechanical room ventilation coordination, compressor driver requirements, and the supplemental components boundary.

Does this checklist confirm the chiller meets its efficiency rating?

No. It is a document-consistency review confirming the drawings and specification describe a matching certification basis and test standard. Actual performance testing and rating verification remain with the manufacturer and commissioning process.

Why does a chiller’s operating pressure matter for the mechanical room?

A chiller that operates below atmospheric pressure requires a purge system and specific refrigerant-emission provisions that a positive-pressure packaged chiller does not, so the room’s ventilation and monitoring design needs to match the actual chiller type selected, not a generic “chiller room” assumption.
