Start with the opening note of the issued Section 08 91 00: confirm that every louver on the elevations and mechanical plans has one tag, size, type, and blade design, that the head, jamb, and sill details show its subframe, sill, and flashing, and that its mullions are drawn on the elevations. Then check that the free area, airflow, and water penetration the mechanical design relies on are stated for the blade type drawn, that the wind load, material, screen, and finish choices fit the site, and that every louvered door on the door schedule is assigned to the section that actually specifies its louver, with any louver in a fire-rated door resolved through the door sections, since this one has no fire-rated louver.
Assemble the review package
Gather the louver schedule, or the louver tags and sizes on the elevations if the set has no schedule, the exterior elevations, the wall sections and the head, jamb, and sill details at each louver with subframes, sill pans, and flashing, the structural framing or lintels at large louver openings and the project wind criteria, the mechanical plans, schedules, and details showing each louver’s airflow, the plenum or duct behind it, any blank-off panels, and dampers, the door schedule and door type elevations with every louvered door, the life safety plans for rated walls and doors, the antiterrorism criteria, the finish or color schedule, the design analysis with the ASHRAE climate zone and the environmental severity classification (ESC) under UFC 1-200-01, and the issued Section 08 91 00 with Sections 23 30 00, 07 60 00, 08 11 13, 08 14 00, and 09 90 00. Trace one outdoor air louver from the mechanical schedule to its elevation tag and sill detail, and one louvered door from the door schedule to its louver article, before assuming the others match.
WBDG publishes UFGS 08 91 00: Metal Wall and Door Louvers as a public guide-specification reference (accessed November 5, 2026). Use your project’s issued specification and amendments for the actual comparison; the guide specification does not automatically govern your project. The checklist below is an original suggested review workflow, not a reproduction of the UFGS requirements.
Eight checks to run against the issued set
Use one record per location or system. The CSV contains the same eight prompts plus fields for source revisions, observed evidence, the review owner, the decision, and closure references.
| Check | Sources to compare | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| What the drawings must show | Opening designer note on drawings + Detail Drawings and Color Samples articles + louver schedule, elevations, and head, jamb, and sill details | Does the set give each louver’s location, size, and type, the details of its construction and installation with the subframe, sill, and flashing, the location and arrangement of its mullions, and the color of factory-finished louvers where the section leaves color to the drawings, as the note lists, so that the detail drawings the contractor submits only develop what the architect already decided? |
| One louver on two disciplines | Louvers article of Section 23 30 00 and its bracketed section reference + opening note of Section 07 60 00 + mechanical plans and schedules + architectural elevations and louver schedule | Does every louver on the mechanical plans appear on the architectural elevations with the same tag, size, and location, and does the Louvers article of the issued Section 23 30 00 send exterior wall louvers to Section 08 91 00 rather than to Section 07 60 00, whose opening note leaves louvers out of the flashing and sheet metal work? |
| Free area, airflow, and water penetration | Metal Wall Louvers article and its designer note + AMCA 500-L and AMCA 511 certified ratings + Louvers article note in Section 23 30 00 + mechanical louver schedule | Where the mechanical design depends on a free area, does the schedule give the blade type as well as the louver size, as the note asks, is the weather resistant or wind driven rain resistant option kept the one the design assumes, does the mechanical schedule give the airflow and pressure drop the rated louver must meet, and where water penetration would be a problem, does the section state the acceptable water penetration at the required velocity or call for operable louvers or dampers, as the note directs? |
| Wind load, mullions, and large louvers | Wind load blank in the Metal Wall Louvers article + Mullions and Mullion Covers article and its note + opening note on very large or special louvers + structural wind criteria + elevations + framing or lintels at the opening | Is the wind load blank filled in from the project’s structural wind criteria, is one mullion option kept, mullions where indicated or mullions set by louver width, and does it agree with the mullions on the elevations, are mullion covers shown at joints between louvers, and do very large louvers, or louvers exposed to snow or seismic loads, have the added paragraphs and bracing the notes call for, with the supporting steel drawn? |
| Material, corrosion, and finish | Materials articles + Extruded Aluminum Louvers and Formed Metal Louvers articles + humid location and ESC designer note + Finishes articles (anodic coating, organic coating, steel) + design analysis + elevations and color schedule | Does the material on the schedule match a kept article, with cold rolled steel only on interior louvers and only aluminum or stainless steel louvers in humid or ESC C3 to C5 locations, as the note directs, is one anodic class or organic coating chosen to suit the same climate and severity class, is the color blank filled in or the color indicated on the drawings, and do the louvers on each building share one finish, as the article requires? |
| Screens, blank-offs, and the plenum behind | Screens and Frames article for wall louvers + opening note on special louvers + Louvers, outdoor air intake duct and plenum, and Bird Screens and Frames articles of Section 23 30 00 + mechanical louver and plenum details | Is the screen on the schedule, bird screen or a finer mesh, one the Screens and Frames article allows for the louver material, in removable, rewirable frames, and is it specified once rather than differently in two sections, where the mechanical details blank off part of a louver face, are the blank-off panels specified somewhere, since this section has no blank-off article, and does the plenum or duct behind each intake louver have the watertight joints, and on snow-prone sites the sloped bottom option, that Section 23 30 00 keeps? |
| Subframes, sills, flashing, and anchorage | Opening designer note on installation details + Wall Louvers installation article + Fasteners and Accessories article + Protection from Contact of Dissimilar Materials articles + pan flashing article of Section 07 60 00 + head, jamb, and sill details + wall sections | Do the head, jamb, and sill details show how each louver is held, by stops or moldings, flanges, strap anchors, or jamb fasteners, in a way that suits the wall drawn at that opening, is a sill pan with end and rear dams drawn under each louver and covered by Section 07 60 00, which puts pan flashing at louver openings, and where an aluminum louver meets steel, masonry, concrete, or wet wood, do the details or the section call for the separation or coating the dissimilar material articles require? |
| Door louvers, the door schedule, and rated doors | Door Louvers, Extruded Aluminum Door Louvers, Formed Metal Door Louvers, door Screens and Frames, and Door Louvers installation articles and their designer notes + door schedule and door type elevations + Sections 08 11 13 and 08 14 00 + life safety plans + antiterrorism criteria | Is each louvered door assigned to the section that specifies its louver, this section’s metal louvers set in wood doors with Z or L moldings, the steel door section’s own Louvers article, or the wood door section’s wood louvers, is the sightproof blade type kept the one drawn, do exterior door louvers have the weather resistant type and insect screens, are louvered exterior doors avoided in humid or ESC C3 to C5 locations and in buildings under the UFC 4-010-01 antiterrorism requirements, as the notes advise, and does any louver in a fire-rated door come from a labeled door assembly, since this section offers no fire-rated louver? |
Worked example: an intake louver sent to the wrong section and a louver in a rated door
Illustrative example: a single-story utility building at an installation that the design analysis places in a humid climate zone has two large outdoor air intake louvers on the generator room wall, a relief louver at the boiler room, and louvered doors at the electrical room and a storage closet. The mechanical schedule lists airflow for each louver but no free area or blade type, and the issued Section 23 30 00 keeps the bracket that sends louvers to Section 07 60 00. The issued Section 08 91 00 keeps formed galvanized steel louvers with a baked enamel finish and leaves the wind load blank and the mullion option unedited, the intake louvers span the wall with no mullions drawn, a mechanical detail blanks off the lower part of one louver face with no blank-off panel specified anywhere, and the electrical room door, rated on the life safety plan, shows a louver on its door type elevation.
Ask the mechanical engineer to give each louver’s free area or blade type with its airflow, pressure drop, and acceptable water penetration, to point Section 23 30 00 to Section 08 91 00, and to specify the blank-off panel in one of the two sections. Ask the architect to change the louvers to aluminum or stainless steel with a finish suited to the installation’s severity class, as the notes direct, to fill in the wind load from the structural criteria and show mullions and supporting steel, and to remove the louver from the rated electrical room door or replace it with a labeled assembly specified with the door, coordinating any transfer air the engineer still needs.
Avoid a false conflict
Section 08 91 00 covers average metal wall louvers and metal louvers in wood doors. Louvers in steel doors are specified in the Louvers article of Section 08 11 13 Steel Doors and Frames, wood louvers in wood doors in Section 08 14 00, gravity ventilators, penthouses, and goosenecks in Section 23 30 00, field painting in Section 09 90 00, and sill pan flashing in Section 07 60 00, so check those before calling a requirement missing. The section has no fire-rated, operable, acoustical, or blank-off panel articles, and its opening note asks designers to add paragraphs for very large or special louvers and for louvers subject to snow or seismic loads, so a drawn condition beyond the basic articles is a question about where it is specified, not a defect in itself. Free area, airflow, pressure drop, and wind load are design values for the mechanical and structural engineers. The published sample plan review report, linked below, includes a finding on two exterior door head details, one of them at a louver, whose frame notes end without a detail reference, the kind of incomplete louver detail to look for here. The current guide section cites AMCA 500-L and 511, AA DAF45, AAMA 611, 2603, and 2605, and ASTM A123, A653, A780, A1008, B209, and B221; confirm the editions your project invokes with the architect and the mechanical engineer.
When requirements disagree, follow the project’s document-control and clarification process. Do not assume that drawings always override specifications, or the reverse. Identify the exact sources and request an authorized decision.
Close the issue across the affected documents
Record the location or tag, drawing and specification references, issue dates, observed difference, and the decision needed. Assign an owner and keep the item open until the response identifies the governing requirement. Check the revised drawings and specification references together; a response email alone may leave the issued package inconsistent.
For the overall process, use the guide to drawing and specification conflicts. Mark an inapplicable checklist row with a reason, and distinguish a verified correction from a question that still needs design information.
