Start with the list in the section’s opening designer note and confirm that the drawings locate and detail every item the issued Section 05 50 13 keeps, that bracketed articles for items not on the project are deleted, and that every miscellaneous item drawn, such as a lintel, relief angle, embedded plate, trench cover, grating, bollard, roof hatch, or steel door frame, is covered by a kept article or another section. Then check that the blanks the section leaves to the designer, such as cover plate and grating live loads, bollard pipe size, and anchor values, are filled in or shown on the drawings, that galvanized items are identified, and that stairs, railings, ladders, and post-installed anchors are left to their own sections.
Assemble the review package
Gather the architectural plans, exterior elevations, and wall sections with masonry openings and brick veneer support, the lintel schedule if one is used, the structural general notes and any miscellaneous steel details, the roof plan and roof details with hatches and walkways, the floor plans and details for trenches, pits, platforms, and gratings, the site and civil plans with bollards and pipe guards, the door schedule and details for structural steel door frames, overhead doors, and freight elevator entrances, and the issued Section 05 50 13 with Sections 05 05 20, 05 12 00, 05 51 00, 05 51 33, 05 52 00, the masonry section, and the painting section. Trace one item of each kind from its plan location to its detail and its article before assuming the others are covered.
WBDG publishes UFGS 05 50 13: Miscellaneous Metal Fabrications as a public guide-specification reference (accessed October 29, 2026). Use your project’s issued specification and amendments for the actual comparison; the guide specification does not automatically govern your project. The checklist below is an original suggested review workflow, not a reproduction of the UFGS requirements.
Eight checks to run against the issued set
Use one record per location or system. The CSV contains the same eight prompts plus fields for source revisions, observed evidence, the review owner, the decision, and closure references.
| Check | Sources to compare | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| What the drawings must show | Opening designer note + plans, elevations, and details + Fabrication Drawings and Installation Drawings articles | For each item the section keeps, do the drawings show its location and configuration, sizes and dimensions, special fastenings or anchoring, and whether it is galvanized, and are expansion joint cover locations, non-standard grating connections, and structural steel door frame details drawn as the note asks? |
| Kept articles vs. items drawn | Bracketed Part 2 and Part 3 articles + Submittals article + plans and details | Are the articles and submittal entries for items not on the project deleted, and does every miscellaneous item the drawings show, such as wheel guards at a loading dock, security grilles, window wells, or a downspout boot, have a kept article or a reference to another section? |
| Lintels, relief angles, and embedded plates | Miscellaneous Plates and Shapes and Installation of Miscellaneous Plates and Shapes articles + masonry elevations, wall sections, and lintel schedule | Is every masonry opening covered by a scheduled or detailed lintel, or is it clear that the contractor sizes lintels under the section’s “as required to support wall loads” wording, is the relief angle bracket kept where the wall sections show brick support angles, and is the end bearing consistent with the details? |
| Cover plates, gratings, and roof walkways | Cover Plates and Frames, Gratings, and Floor Gratings and Roof Walkways articles + trench, pit, platform, and roof details | Are the live load blanks filled in for the spans drawn, does the grating type and its banding and anchorage option match the details, is vehicular grating identified where trucks or aircraft cross it, and are roof walkways detailed to allow roof movement on supports compatible with the roofing? |
| Bollards and pipe guards | Bollards/Pipe Guards and Installation of Bollards/Pipe Guards articles + site plans + bollard details | Is the pipe size and weight bracket filled in, are the installation details shown on the drawings as the execution designer note requires, and is it clear which bollards are simple pipe guards and which are vehicle barriers specified elsewhere? |
| Roof hatches and their guards | Roof Hatches (Scuttles) articles and execution designer note + roof plan and curb details + Sections 05 52 00 and 05 51 33 | Is the hatch material chosen and the hatch located on the roof plan with a curb and flashing detail, are the guardrails around the opening detailed and covered in the metal railings section, as the designer note asks, and is the access ladder below covered by the metal ladders section? |
| Structural steel door frames and guards | Structural Steel Door Frames, Window and Door Guards, and Door Guard Frame articles + door schedule + overhead door and freight elevator details | Which of the alternate door frame paragraphs is kept, are the frames located and detailed, is support shown for overhead door track, hoods, and operators, and does the guard mounting kept (interior or exterior) suit the jamb material drawn? |
| Anchors, fasteners, and finishes | Anchor Bolts article and its anchor bracket + Galvanizing, Shop Cleaning and Painting, and Dissimilar Metals articles + Section 05 05 20 + exterior and corrosive location details | If the expansion, sleeve, or adhesive anchor bracket is kept, are its blanks filled in or is it deleted in favor of Section 05 05 20 so the same anchor is not specified twice, is the stainless steel type chosen for corrosive locations, and is shop painting changed for exterior steel as the designer note advises? |
Worked example: a relief angle and a roof hatch with nowhere to go
Illustrative example: a vehicle maintenance facility has load-bearing masonry walls with brick veneer, a trench drain across the service bays, pipe bollards at each overhead door, and a roof hatch above a mezzanine. The wall sections show a steel relief angle at each floor line, but the issued Section 05 50 13 deleted the relief angle bracket, the lintel schedule omits the overhead door openings, the cover plate and grating live load blanks are empty, the bollards have no detail, the roof hatch has no guardrail on the drawings or in Section 05 52 00, and the section keeps the adhesive anchor bracket with blank values while Section 05 05 20 is also in the project.
Ask the architect and structural engineer to restore the relief angle bracket or detail the angles in the structural steel section, to add the overhead door lintels to the schedule or state that the contractor sizes them, to fill in the cover plate and grating loads for vehicle traffic, and to add a bollard detail. Ask for a guardrail at the roof hatch to be drawn and added to Section 05 52 00, and delete the anchor bracket in favor of the anchors already specified in Section 05 05 20.
Avoid a false conflict
Section 05 50 13 is a collection of loose and attached items, so check the neighbouring sections before calling an item unspecified. Metal stairs are covered in Section 05 51 00 and the metal stair guide, handrails, guards, and roof hatch guardrails in Section 05 52 00 and the metal railing guide, fixed ladders and ship stairs in Section 05 51 33, post-installed anchors in Section 05 05 20, framing attached to the structural steel in Section 05 12 00, and interior corner guards may be sent to Section 10 26 00. Expansion joint covers appear in the submittal list and an installation article but have no product article of their own, so confirm where the cover is specified. Lintel and relief angle sizing, grating and cover plate loads, and whether a bollard must stop a vehicle stay with the architect and structural engineer of record.
When requirements disagree, follow the project’s document-control and clarification process. Do not assume that drawings always override specifications, or the reverse. Identify the exact sources and request an authorized decision.
Close the issue across the affected documents
Record the location or tag, drawing and specification references, issue dates, observed difference, and the decision needed. Assign an owner and keep the item open until the response identifies the governing requirement. Check the revised drawings and specification references together; a response email alone may leave the issued package inconsistent.
For the overall process, use the guide to drawing and specification conflicts. Mark an inapplicable checklist row with a reason, and distinguish a verified correction from a question that still needs design information.
