Follow a member or connection from the framing plan into its schedule, details, and specification clauses. Reconcile material, connection responsibility, coatings, and inspection references while leaving engineering design decisions with the responsible designer.
Assemble the review package
Use structural notes, framing plans, member schedules, connection details, and the structural steel specification from the same governing issue. Bring in architectural exposed-steel and fireproofing requirements where relevant. If shop drawings are available, identify their review status separately; a proposed fabrication detail does not silently amend the contract documents.
WBDG publishes UFGS 05 12 00: Structural Steel as a public guide-specification reference (accessed September 16, 2026). Use your project’s issued specification and amendments for the actual comparison; the guide specification does not automatically govern your project. The checklist below is an original suggested review workflow, not a reproduction of the UFGS requirements.
Eight checks to run against the issued set
Use one record per location or system. The CSV contains the same eight prompts plus fields for source revisions, observed evidence, the review owner, the decision, and closure references.

Worked example: conflicting treatment of concealed steel
Illustrative example: a general specification calls for shop-primed steel, while an assembly detail identifies a different substrate treatment for members receiving a protection system. The framing plan does not distinguish the affected members. A fabrication package could reasonably carry the broad priming note into those locations.
Identify the member marks within the assembly, pair the drawing note with the specification clauses, and ask the team to document the intended coating scope and compatibility. Recheck revised notes as well as the member list. The published governing-revision finding illustrates why confirming the current schedule comes before resolving its content.

Avoid a false conflict
Do not treat every statement about steel as applying to every steel product. Structural framing, miscellaneous metalwork, anchors, and exposed architectural finishes can be addressed separately. A missing cross-reference is a question to resolve, not proof that the connection or coating is technically unsuitable.
When requirements disagree, follow the project’s document-control and clarification process. Do not assume that drawings always override specifications, or the reverse. Identify the exact sources and request an authorized decision.
Close the issue across the affected documents
Record the location or tag, drawing and specification references, issue dates, observed difference, and the decision needed. Assign an owner and keep the item open until the response identifies the governing requirement. Check the revised drawings and specification references together; a response email alone may leave the issued package inconsistent.
