Check structural standing seam roof specifications against roof framing and details

Section 07 61 14 Steel Standing Seam Roofing and its companion, Section 07 61 15 Aluminum Standing Seam Roofing, both published in August 2025 as new unified sections superseding the 07 61 14.00 20 and 07 61 15.00 20 editions, cover structural standing seam metal roof systems whose panels span from purlin to purlin and carry the roof loads themselves, held by concealed clips that let the roof move with temperature. Both cover design loads and wind uplift testing, thermal movement, the engineer’s calculations for clips, fasteners, and intermediate supports, shop drawings with roof zones, panel material, finish, and cool roof requirements, closures, fasteners, sealants, insulation and liner panels, flashing, the manufacturer’s field inspection, warranties, and the roof information card. The review task is the same for both, so this guide covers them together: the aluminum section adds lines of fixity and individually designated clip types to its list of what the drawings must show, a water infiltration test under rain and wind, and a flame spread paragraph for the finish, and it treats galvanized steel and treated wood as materials to separate from the aluminum.

First confirm that the roof drawn is a structural standing seam system spanning between purlins, then compare the slope, supporting framework, clip types and spacing, intermediate supports, fixed points, and design loads on the drawings with the issued Section 07 61 14 or 07 61 15, and check that the wind uplift basis and roof zones match the structural criteria the manufacturer’s engineer will design to. Then check that every ridge, eave, rake, valley, wall junction, and penetration has a flashing and closure detail that allows thermal movement, that rooftop accessories attach without piercing the panels, and that the material, finish, dissimilar metal protection, field inspection, and warranty paragraphs kept fit the site.

Assemble the review package

Gather the roof plan with slopes, ridges, valleys, penetrations, curbs, and rooftop equipment, the roof framing plan with purlin spacing and any intermediate supports or sub-framing, the roof sections and the eave, rake, ridge, valley, wall junction, expansion joint, and penetration details, the structural general notes with the wind design criteria and the design load or stress diagram, the energy and sustainability documents for insulation, cool roof, and heat island requirements, the design analysis with the site’s climate zone and environmental severity classification, the airfield layout if glare could affect a control tower or runway, the fall protection and roof access drawings, the lightning protection and mechanical drawings for anything mounted on the roof, and the issued Section 07 61 14 or 07 61 15 with Sections 07 41 13 and 07 60 00, the Division 07 insulation section, and Section 01 45 00. Follow one panel run from eave to ridge, including one penetration and the fixed point, before assuming the others are the same.

WBDG publishes UFGS 07 61 14: Steel Standing Seam Roofing as a public guide-specification reference (accessed November 3, 2026). Use your project’s issued specification and amendments for the actual comparison; the guide specification does not automatically govern your project. The checklist below is an original suggested review workflow, not a reproduction of the UFGS requirements.

Structural system and section choiceOpening designer notes of Sections 07 61 14 and 07 61 15 + roof framing plan + roof sections + Section 07 41 13Do the framing plan and sections show panels spanning between purlins, as these sections assume, rather than an architectural panel over a solid deck that the notes send to Section 07 41 13, and does the edited section match the panel metal drawn, steel under 07 61 14 or aluminum under 07 61 15?
What the drawings must showOpening designer note on drawings in each section + roof plan, framing plan, and detailsDoes the set give the roof slope, the supporting framework, intermediate support or track details, attachment clip spacing, flashing support and fastening spacing, roof venting, sealant and closure locations, dissimilar metal protection, accessory and penetration details, design loads, and permanent fall protection, plus the lines of fixity the aluminum section adds to the list?
Clip types, spacing, and supportsAttachment Clips and Intermediate Supports articles + aluminum designer note on clip types + Design Calculations or Load Calculations article + framing planIs the clip spacing and any intermediate support shown for each roof zone, and on an aluminum roof, is each clip type designated on the drawings with its spacing and its minimum capacity filled in under Attachment Clips, as the note asks, and do the calculations the section requires cover the clip fastening, support spacing, and allowable panel span at the spacing drawn?
Wind uplift and roof zonesWind Uplift or Wind Loads, Structural Performance, Design Calculations or Load Calculations, and Shop Drawings or Roofing Shop Drawings articles + structural wind criteria + roof planDo the drawings give the wind design pressures and the edge, ridge, and corner zone dimensions that the calculations and the shop drawing isometric must use, does the uplift test basis kept match the system drawn, and are overhangs and roof edges detailed for the higher wind forces the notes warn about?
Thermal movement and fixed pointsDesign Requirements and Thermal Movement articles + Roof Panels installation article + roof plan + ridge, eave, and end lap detailsIs the design low temperature blank filled in from the engineering weather data, with the temperature range chosen for the finish color, are fixed points or lines of fixity shown, and do the ridge, eave, end lap, and penetration details let the panels move without fasteners restraining them?
Flashing, closures, and penetrationsAccessories, Closures, Sealants or Sealant Tape, Flashings, Flashing Fasteners, and Closure Strips articles and their designer notes + roof plan + flashing details + Section 07 60 00Is there a detail for the ridge, eaves, rakes, valleys, wall junctions, and each penetration, are flashings fastened at close spacing rather than cleated, as the flashing notes say, are closure and sealant locations shown, are curbs and equipment supports detailed, and does the roof plan carry the steel section’s note to center penetrations between panel seams?
Material, finish, and dissimilar metalsMaterial, Finish, Factory Color Finish or Prefinished Coating System, Solar Reflectance, Laboratory Tests for Panel Finish, Fire Hazard, and Protection from Contact with Dissimilar Materials or Protection of Dissimilar Metals articles and their designer notes + design analysis + energy documents + airfield layoutDoes the coating or alloy chosen follow the notes for the site’s climate zone and severity class, is the glare resistance option kept for roofs near control towers or other glare-critical areas, is the cool roof sentence kept where the energy documents need it, is the aluminum flame spread paragraph kept only where the finish is exposed inside, and are separations drawn where panels touch other metals, masonry, concrete, or wood?
Rooftop accessories, inspection, and warrantyOpening designer note on accessories + Preroofing Conference, Manufacturer’s Field Inspection, Warranty, and Information Card articles + roof plan + fall protection, lightning protection, and mechanical drawings + Section 01 45 00Are walkways, ladders, snow restraints, antenna mounts, lightning protection, and fall protection anchors attached with seam clamps or clips that do not pierce the panels, as the notes suggest, with curbs for mechanical equipment, are the field inspection visits coordinated with Section 01 45 00, and are the warranty terms and information card edited for the Service?

Worked example: an aluminum roof with one unnamed clip type and no fixed point

Illustrative example: a hangar shop addition on a humid coastal base has an aluminum standing seam roof spanning between steel purlins, with a ridge vent, two exhaust fan curbs, and a row of snow guards above the entrance. The issued Section 07 61 15 lists a single unnamed clip type with its capacity blank, the framing plan shows purlin spacing but no clip spacing or roof zones, no line of fixity appears on the roof plan or details, the snow guards are drawn screwed through the panels, and the curb details show galvanized steel framing bearing directly on the aluminum panels.

Ask the architect and structural engineer to designate each clip type with its spacing in the field, edge, and corner zones and fill in each minimum capacity under Attachment Clips, to show the wind design pressures and zone dimensions, and to locate the line of fixity with ridge and eave details that let the panels move. Ask the architect to change the snow guards to seam clamps and to separate the galvanized curb framing from the aluminum, as the dissimilar metal note asks for galvanized steel in humid or corrosive locations.

Avoid a false conflict

Sections 07 61 14 and 07 61 15 cover structural standing seam roofs that span between purlins. Architectural panels laid over a solid deck follow Section 07 41 13 and the metal roof panel guide, the roof of a pre-engineered building supplied by the building manufacturer is normally specified in Section 13 34 19 and the metal building guide, metal wall panels follow Section 07 42 13, and insulation belongs in a Division 07 insulation section, with the insulation paragraphs here used only when none is included, so confirm which section governs before calling a requirement missing. Gutters and downspouts are bracketed in the accessories article, so check whether your project put them here or in Section 07 60 00 and the flashing and sheet metal guide. Both sections cite ASCE 7-22, ASTM E1592, UL 580, FM 4471, NRCA, and SMACNA 1793, and their notes point to UFC 3-110-03 and UFC 3-301-01 for wind uplift; confirm the criteria your project invokes with the architect and structural engineer of record.

When requirements disagree, follow the project’s document-control and clarification process. Do not assume that drawings always override specifications, or the reverse. Identify the exact sources and request an authorized decision.

Close the issue across the affected documents

Record the location or tag, drawing and specification references, issue dates, observed difference, and the decision needed. Assign an owner and keep the item open until the response identifies the governing requirement. Check the revised drawings and specification references together; a response email alone may leave the issued package inconsistent.

For the overall process, use the guide to drawing and specification conflicts. Mark an inapplicable checklist row with a reason, and distinguish a verified correction from a question that still needs design information.

Where Groundbook fits

Groundbook’s drawing and specification review helps investigate potential disagreements in the documents you supply. Include the relevant specification sections and drawing references, then verify the cited evidence with the responsible reviewers before acting on a finding.

Questions, answered

FAQs

What should a standing seam roof specification review compare?

Compare the structural system and section choice, what the drawings must show, clip types, spacing, and supports, wind uplift and roof zones, thermal movement and fixed points, flashing, closures, and penetrations, material, finish, and dissimilar metals, and rooftop accessories, inspection, and warranty.

How is a structural standing seam roof different from a metal roof panel over a deck?

A structural standing seam panel spans between purlins and carries the roof loads itself, held by concealed clips that let it move with temperature, while an architectural panel needs a continuous deck and underlayment beneath it. The current UFGS 07 61 14 and 07 61 15 on WBDG cover the structural type in steel and aluminum, and their notes send architectural use to Section 07 41 13. Your project’s issued specifications govern which section applies.

Does this checklist confirm the roof resists wind uplift?

No. It checks that the framing, roof drawings, and specification describe the same panels, clips, fixed points, and details, and each difference it finds is a question for the architect or structural engineer of record. Wind uplift design, the clip and fastener calculations, warranty acceptance, and approval stay with them, the manufacturer’s engineer, and the authority having jurisdiction.
